You’ve been waiting for a few months for your coronavirus vaccine schedule, you have some emotions about the side effects, so before you leave home, swallow an analgesic to make sure you don’t have any problems. Nothing could be further from the truth, says the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The reason is quite simple to understand. The administration of an analgesic before receiving the vaccine may lead to a “decreased response to antibodies,” said Dr. Gregory Poland, director of the vaccine research group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
Although the chances of a diminished immune response are not fully studied, Poland claims that it is better to bear the side effects of the vaccine than to risk that its effect is diminished.
“After the vaccine is given, if someone develops symptoms that they want to treat, that’s fine, but never before,” he said. “Now, this is a recommendation of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.”
But there are some exceptions. People who normally take painkillers, such as those who suffer from migraines, should take their medication.
“Take the medicine, instead of getting a strong migraine and going to the emergency room to get a much stronger or more expensive therapy,” Poland said.
He also mentioned that the side effects of the vaccine may differ between the two doses, the effects after the second dose are usually more severe.
“I tell you that after the first dose my arm only hurt a little. After the second dose, however, I had a moderate pain in my arm and I had four hours of tremors, chills with fever. I took an anti-inflammatory, went to bed, woke up much better the next day, and by the afternoon I fully recovered. “
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also warns against taking antihistamines before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, “because it could mask the onset or development of allergic reactions,” added Dr. Gregory Poland, according to webmd.com .
