The Czech Republic asks for help: There are hardly any free intensive care beds

Because of the corona pandemic, the capacities of the intensive care units in the Czech Republic could soon be completely exhausted. The Deputy Health Minister Vladimir Cerny warned of this on Tuesday. The medicine professor emphasized that the country had never been in such a situation.

The Czech Republic has started to negotiate about possible aid from abroad. There is an offer from Germany to take on nine intensive care patients. In addition, patients are to be further redistributed to less severely affected areas within the Czech Republic.

1.300 Intensivpatienten

Currently, more than 6,500 Covid-19 patients are being treated in Czech hospitals. More than 1,300 of them require intensive medical treatment. For comparison: Austria currently has around 350 intensive care patients to care for.

The main problem is the lack of qualified health workers. With 968 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within 14 days, the Czech Republic is at the top across the EU, as the most recent comparative figures from the EU health agency ECDC show.

Meanwhile, the start of a tightened FFP2 mask requirement in high-traffic locations such as supermarkets and public transport has been postponed to Thursday. It should actually have come into force on Monday. But in many pharmacies and shops the masks were temporarily sold out.
