Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, was detained at Dulles Airport in Washington. This is the Joe Biden administration’s first major action against drug cartels, reports the Daily Mail.
Coronel was charged, inter alia, with drug trafficking (participating in plots to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana in the United States), planning the escape of “El Chapo” from a prison in Mexico and maintaining contacts with “Chapitos”, the sons of Guzman the unions that currently run the powerful Sinaloa cartel.
On July 11, 2015, Guzman made a daring escape from the Mexican Altiplano prison in Almoloya de Juarez. His wife, who was responsible for financing the escape, helped organize this project. A long tunnel was dug underground, which allowed Guzman to go beyond the penitentiary facility.
“El Chapo” was re-captured in 2016. It was also then that his wife became involved in planning his escape. She was to donate two million dollars to bribe the official overseeing the Mexican prison system and a total of one million to another person who is now testifying as a witness against her. Her plans were thwarted by the transfer of Joaquin Guzman to an American prison in 2017.
One ex-DEA (US anti-drug trafficking agency) agent who worked undercover in Mexico told the Daily Mail that the former beauty queen was a true “drug princess” deeply entangled in the cartel. She also had family ties with the Sinaloa cartel. Her father and brother were soldiers of the local drug lords.
According to observers, this high-level arrest is a treat for US services, but prosecutors are likely to fight for Ms. Guzman to testify. It alone is not worth as much as the information it has about the activities of the cartel.
She was not directly involved in money laundering, cocaine smuggling or logistics, but did follow her husband’s orders, relayed messages, etc. As the former DEA agent who spoke to the Daily Mail emphasizes, Coronel was active in the cartel world until her husband’s extradition in 2017 . From then on, she focused more on spending the money he collected and taking care of their two daughters.
Emma Coronel and Joaquin Guzman got married in 2007. In 2011, a woman gave birth to twins, but in their birth certificates the column with the father’s name remains empty. During the “El Chapo” trial, Emma Coronel was constantly present, and her husband waved her from across the courtroom and blew kisses. As the Daily Mail points out, she listened to the testimony of herds of former lovers of Guzman and associates who turned their backs on him.
The drug baron’s wife treated subsequent trials as a fashion runway, and announced that she was launching her own clothing collection. In 2019, she even held talks to join the cast of the reality show “Cartel Crew.”
