European Court of Human Rights – Ukraine sues Russia for “targeted assassinations”


Kiev accuses Moscow of having carried out “operations of targeted assassinations of suspected opponents”, including Alexeï Navalny and the former double agent Sergei Skripal.

Ukraine has brought proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against Russia. She accuses Russia of having carried out “targeted assassination operations of suspected opponents” including Alexeï Navalny and Sergei Skripal.

An ECHR press release announced it on Tuesday. “Interstate request”

The request, filed Friday, targets assassinations perpetrated “in Russia and on the territory of other states, including other member states of the Council of Europe, outside a situation of armed conflict,” said in its press release the Court which sits in Strasbourg.

This “interstate petition”, a procedure by which one state pursues another before the ECHR, is the ninth brought by Ukraine against Russia, four still being examined by the judicial arm of the Council of Europe. of which these two countries are members, still according to the ECHR.

The Ukrainian government also accuses Moscow of “not carrying out investigations into these assassination operations” and of “deliberately organizing cover-up operations aimed at thwarting efforts to find those responsible”, the Court continued.

Kiev thus invokes a violation of the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights on the “right to life”, she adds.

Crash MH17

The other interstate petitions brought by Kiev against Moscow and under consideration concern “the events in eastern Ukraine, including the crash of the Malaysian Airlines MH17 plane, which was shot down in July 2014”. “Numerous violations of the Convention” in Crimea.

A “naval incident which took place in the Kerch Strait in 2018 and which led to the capture of three Ukrainian navy ships and their crews”, is also concerned by a request according to the ECHR.

Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula was followed by war with pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine that left nearly 13,000 dead.
