The prefect of Reunion and the director of the ARS take the floor this Tuesday, February 23 to take stock of the epidemiological situation in the department. New protective measures are expected.
With the increase in the number of Covid cases, including cases with variants, in recent days, the authorities are taking new measures. An additional turn of the screw to prevent the epidemic from spreading further and that the department is no longer able to take care of the sick.
Hospital capacity, however increased, is already severely tested. Operating theaters have been closed, new Covid medicine and resuscitation beds opened. Seven towns on the island are already placed under curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., three shopping centers of more than 20,000 m2 have been closed and health protocols have been reinforced in administrations and even in restaurants.
Last night, the Minister of Overseas Affairs, Sébastien Lecornu, announced that he had asked the Prefect of La Réunion to make proposals to him to strengthen the protection of Reunionese men and women.
This Tuesday, February 23, Jacques Billant should make the announcement. A speech that comes after the prefect of Reunion has not met with the mayors of the 24 municipalities of the island, as is the case every Tuesday.

A widespread curfew
“The situation is worrying” declared the prefect. 857 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the past seven days. “We have exceeded the average of 100 new cases per day. We are now at a daily average of 120 cases. The incidence rate has crossed 100 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants “ specifies the director general of the ARS of Reunion. Faced with the deterioration of the health situation, the prefect has therefore announced the establishment of a curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting tomorrow throughout the department.
