KIEV. February 23. UNN. Ukrainians questioned US President Joe Biden’s position on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 project after the US leader spoke at the Munich Security Conference. This was reported by Axios with reference to a source close to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, reports UNN.
On Monday, a source close to the Ukrainian president told Axios that “Ukrainians are a little disappointed that President Biden did not commit himself during the Munich conference to use all the tools he can to stop Nord Stream 2.”
“But it is not too late for the United States to take decisive action, and Ukrainians hope that the Biden administration will do so,” added a source close to Zelensky.
The comments followed a joint article by Polish and Ukrainian foreign ministers for Politico Europe, in which foreign ministers called on Biden to follow the example of the US Congress and do everything in its power to stop Nord Stream-2.
Work on laying Nord Stream-2 pipes resumed in December 2020 after a one-year break. In January, Germany’s federal shipping and hydrographic agency allowed further construction of a gas pipeline in German waters, but German environmentalists protested the issuance of the document. The permit is temporarily suspended. In Danish waters, construction resumed only in February and is expected to be completed by May.
The construction of Nord Stream 2 has sparked heated debate in a number of countries. Yes, Washington believes it will make Europe dependent on Russian gas. And after the resonant poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Germany and Europe, discussions began about the possible imposition of sanctions affecting the pipeline.
In January, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the Fortuna pipelayer and its owner, KVT-Rus. This vessel is involved in the construction of the gas pipeline. And in February, a group of congressmen called on US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to investigate the possibility of similar measures against 11 Russian-flagged ships and four other foreign ones, which US lawmakers believe are involved in the construction of the pipeline.
We would like to add that the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is being built to supply gas to Germany bypassing Ukraine. Ukraine points to the political nature of this project and that if Nord Stream 2 is built, Russia will organize a series of provocations to finally stop transit through Ukraine. Germany says it does not consider the project political and has taken steps to preserve gas transit through Ukraine.
