Emma Coronel Aispuro, the 31-year-old wife of Mexican drug lord El Chapo, was arrested in the United States on Monday on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking. She is accused of helping El Chapo run his Sinaloa cartel and his escape from a Mexican prison in 2015, AP news agency reports.
Coronel is a Mexican and American national. She was arrested at Dulles Airport in West Virginia on suspicion of participating in a criminal organization that traded cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and cannabis in the US. She is expected to be brought to court on Tuesday. Her lawyer did not want to respond to AP on Monday about her arrest.
Coronel and El Chapo, thirty years older, have been together since at least 2007 and had twins together in 2011. When her husband was re-detained after his escape from prison, she tried to force the Mexican government to give him better treatment in prison. El Chapo was sentenced to life in 2019 for his role in the Sinaloa cartel, which traded billions in drugs and is responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.
El Chapo, who is actually called Joaquín Guzmán, escaped from a prison outside Mexico City in 2015. He escaped through a tunnel connecting the bathroom in his cell to a construction site more than a mile away. According to justice, henchmen had arranged for him a piece of land, firearms, an armored vehicle and a GPS watch. This would involve El Chapo’s sons, and a witness who is now cooperating with the law. According to the prosecutors, the drug lord’s wife also played a role in this.
For the time being, Coronel has remained behind El Chapo as far as is known. She regularly attended court sessions, and after his conviction launched a clothing line under his name in the United States. Experts say the charges could be a way to pressure her to make a statement. Her father was the leader of the American branch of Sinaloa, according to Reuters. In 2013, he was arrested along with one of his sons and several others in a warehouse where hundreds of kilos of marijuana were stored.
