the unbearable ordeal of little Maddilyn-Rose in Australia

The parents of a little girl who died after being burned in the second degree were sentenced Monday to 11 and 9 years in prison.

Maddilyn-Rose Ava Stokes died in excruciating pain. The little girl of two died in 2017 after being second-degree burned. His parents were sentenced Monday in Brisbane, Australia, to 11 and 9 years in prison. Shane David Stokes, 33, and Nicole Betty Moore, 26, have pleaded guilty to torture and homicide, ABC.Au reports. The investigation revealed that she had been scalded by her parents, who then took five days to call for help. When firefighters arrived, she was unconscious and more than half of her body was burned. She went into cardiac arrest and died of sepsis shortly after being admitted to hospital.

On Friday in court, her father admitted having now his daughter under hot water for a long time, scalding her legs, back, groin and buttocks. “She was certainly in great distress and suffered terribly during this time, she was unable to walk,” said prosecutor Sarah Farnden. According to the accused’s lawyer, he and his wife did not realize at the time the seriousness of the injuries inflicted on the little girl. What the prosecutor considered impossible, considering “that it was obvious” that Maddilyn-Rose should have been taken care of immediately.

“Your dismal failure to fulfill your parental duties caused his death”

Shane David Stokes changed sides several times during the investigation. He first explained that he left his daughter alone with her sister in the bathtub and then heard a scream. He eventually indicated that he himself put her under hot water after she “soiled his diaper”. “The injuries are consistent with the fact that Maddilyn was kept upright under water above 60 degrees for a period of more than 30 seconds,” the court said. The mother’s lawyer recalled that she was not present at the time of the incident and that she believed her sister had burned the child. “She never heard any other story other than that. She wanted to call an ambulance, she should have. But she did not do that for lack of consideration or malice, she was just afraid that her child would be taken away from her, ”he said. The couple had indeed already been found guilty of abusing their daughter, in 2015, after not giving her enough to eat for a long time. “At eight months, she became dangerously thin due to malnutrition … she was removed from their custody for seven weeks until she regained weight,” recalled the judge Monday.

After the child’s death, the investigation revealed that the couple worked together to find a way to treat burns at home, up to two days before calling for help. In addition, an autopsy report showed that the child had swallowed antidepressants, the same type as those prescribed to his father. The drug, according to the prosecution, was used to “calm or calm” the girl, reports 7News. “Your dismal failure to fulfill your parental duties after she was burned caused her death,” the judge said at the verdict.
