“The search for the human remains affected by the disaster is still ongoing,” said Mayor Francesco Olivari on Tuesday.
Shortly after the demolition, the fire brigade, coast guard and other helpers had started the rescue from the sea with boats below the picturesque cemetery. According to Italian agency reports, there could be around 200 coffins and other items from the graves. Workers who were working in the cemetery heard a loud noise, then the outer wall and part of the site broke away. “Some of the fallen remains are probably also on the slope under the rubble,” explained Olivari.
The cause of the landslide in the region popular with tourists with many rocky cliffs near Genoa was initially open. According to Olivari, however, heavy rainfall in recent years could have changed the subsoil. There were no injuries in the landslide. At first, experts saw no great danger to other buildings in the vicinity. Camogli is a historic port town with a medieval defensive castle.
