The first weapons of the self-propelled multi-barrel long-range missile launcher HIMARS arrived in Romania, which made that country from the neighborhood of Serbia the first European country to use that American combat system.
According to the Balkan Security Network portal, the first 18 weapons were delivered to the port of Constanta on Saturday, February 20, from where they will be forwarded to the 81st Tactical Missile Battalion in Focsani, a town near the border with Moldova.
The procurement of HIMARS was agreed in 2018. These are three batteries with a total of 18 launchers, as well as ammunition, a fire control system and associated sensors, logistical support, maintenance and training of crews. The delivery is part of a broader package signed by the United States and Romania worth $ 1.25 billion.
The purchase of that combat system is part of a comprehensive plan to equip the Romanian army for the period from 2017 to 2026, which envisages the allocation of two percent of GDP per year for the purchase of new weapons, which also includes the Patriot air defense system, F-16 fighter and other weapons. .
It is a means of rocket artillery on the chassis of a truck that fires 227 millimeter caliber missiles with a maximum range of 70 kilometers. Alternatively, instead of several missiles, one MGM-140 ballistic missile with a range of up to 300 kilometers can be launched. Western sources describe HIMARS as a very reliable combat tool tested in real war conditions in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.
In addition to the US Army, it is also used by the National Guard and the Marines, while the armed forces of Singapore, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates have so far received HIMARS from foreign buyers, Beta reports.
