Sweden: Meteorite found near Stockholm

The remnants of a meteorite that hit near Stockholm a few months ago have been found in Sweden. The sky spectacle caused a stir at the time.

Two Swedes discovered an iron meteorite weighing almost 14 kilograms. This is the alleged main piece of a meteorite impact on November 7th, as announced by the Stockholm-based Natural History Museum.

Two private individuals, geologists from the capital with an interest in meteorites, made the rare find near Enköping northwest of Stockholm and handed it over to the museum. According to the museum, it is the first time in over 60 years that a meteorite observed during a crash has been found in Sweden.

Metereorit weighed an estimated nine tons

Many people in the Swedish region had seen a fireball on November 7th that lit the sky for about three seconds. The astronomer Eric Stempels from Uppsala University then calculated the approximate location of the impact where small fragments of an iron meteorite were later found.

The now discovered piece is 30 centimeters long and arguably the largest remnant of the celestial body, which weighed an estimated nine tons when it entered the atmosphere and then burned up. Some smaller parts are still suspected in the area.
