Kenya’s wildlife agency announced today that two giraffes died of electrocution on Sunday when they hit electrical cables in the western part of the country.
Trizer Mwakinya, from the communications department of the country’s wildlife agency, quoted by the Associated Press, announced that workers at the state-owned power company had “been on site” to correct the problem.
Conservationist Paula Kahumbu alerted the agency and the state power company to the deaths that electric cables recently caused, including giraffes, vultures and flamingos.
“The experts’ advice was ignored. Regulatory impact assessments are notoriously poor in many development projects. It is sad that this type of death is necessary to sensitize some people ”, wrote the conservationist on the social platform Twitter.
In a previous tweet, in which he shared an image of two giraffes under an electric pole, Kahumbu pointed out that they are animals of the Rothschild subspecies, the tallest in the world.
Kenya’s wildlife agency said there are only 609 Rothschild giraffes in the country.
It is estimated that there are 1,400 specimens in natural ‘habitat’, and according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the subspecies are no longer considered “in danger”, although they remain in the “almost threatened” category.
