Mexican drug trafficker El Chapo’s wife Emma Coronel Aispuro was detained at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, according to a US Department of Justice source. At stake are allegations of drug trafficking and alleged aid to El Chapo’s escape from Altiplano prison through a tunnel in 2015.
Emma Colonel is due to be heard in court this Tuesday by videoconference. The dual nationality citizen, American and Mexican, is accused of aiding the entry of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana into the United States, reported The Guardian newspaper.
The 31-year-old woman’s indictment includes not only the escape aid from Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in 2015, but the planning of a new escape attempt after the drug trafficker was arrested in 2016 and before he was extradited to the United States in 2017.
Drug trafficking, violence and money laundering. The crimes that can condemn ‘El Chapo’ to life imprisonment
Unlike women from other drug traffickers, Emma Coronel was very involved in her husband’s business, added The New York Times. El Chapo’s wife since the age of 17, she was present in practically every session of her husband’s trial in 2019, when he was sentenced to life in prison.
