Video: Footage of a rover landing and sounds from Mars

Spectacular images of landing on Mars and your chance to become an astronaut

“This is the first time we’ve been able to catch an event like the landing on Mars,” he told a news conference Michael Watkins, director of the NASA JPL Institute.

“I waited 25 years to be able to see the spacecraft land on Mars. It was worth the wait,” jhe said Matt Wallace, Deputy Project Manager Mars 2020, of which the Rover Perseverance is a part.

The video is three minutes and 25 seconds long. It does not contain all the “seven minutes of horror”, as they say on the time between entering the atmosphere and landing on NASA, but part of the opening of the parachute onwards, ie from 11 kilometers down, writes in a press release.

“These pictures and videos are what we’ve been dreaming about for years,” is said Allen Chen, who was responsible for the landing. The video is not only visually interesting for everyone, but also gives engineers an insight into what was previously only possible to guess and computer model.

Unfortunately, they failed to record sound during the fall. A special microphone was intended for this, but as they put it on NASA, they didn’t get it “useful data”. They pointed out that they did not develop it themselves, but it was obtained on the market.

It did the microphone turned out on the ground where he caught the sound of Mars wind and rover operation.

The clip itself is nothing short of breathtaking. However, each of us can write on our calendar that on that February day in 2021, we first heard a sound from another planet.

It wasn’t the first microphone, but it worked first

Nasa has twice unsuccessfully tried to capture the sounds of Mars twice. The first microphone was installed on the expedition Mars Polar Lander in 1999, but the probe crashed to the ground. The other was on Phoenix from 2008. This was precluded as a precaution due to a software error.

Some kind of sound was recorded by a stationary platform InSight. It is equipped with a sensitive seismometer that records ground vibrations, and can also be disturbed by the wind blowing into the dome. NASA translated this information into the following “audio” recording:

Perseverance has two microphones. The first was intended for descent and was used this time. The second is in the central “mast”, a metal rod stretched out with a set of scientific instruments on top. This is yet to come.

Video 4: In 2011, Curiosity took a series of photos during the descent, which they then combined

Perseverance landed on Mars on Thursday at 9:56 p.m. It won’t be a good time. Engineers are still checking and integrating individual systems and planning its route. It will start moving once in the next 28 salts (Martian days).

It is the largest (3 mx 2.7 mx 2.2 m), most massive and most advanced Martian rover to date. On Mars, he will look for traces of a possible life or once favorable conditions for him. He will drill into rocks, heat them with a laser and chemically analyze them, collect samples for transmission to Earth sometime in the future, check the structure of the soil with radar, and record everything video and audio. It will also produce oxygen.

As a curiosity: he landed in a crater The lake, named after a Bosnian village. There used to be a lake in the crater. Two valleys lead to it, where rivers once flowed. The valleys are named Sava valley in Neretva valley. The valley leads from the crater Pliva Vallis.
