A man perched on an electric pole doing sit-ups caused a huge power cut in China that plunged thousands of homes into darkness, state media reported Tuesday (Feb. 23).

The unusual scene took place Sunday evening in the southwest of the country in Chengdu, a huge metropolis of some 16.5 million people, according to the Daily of the people.

The man, whose name has not been released, miraculously escaped unharmed and was arrested by police. His motives were not known.

The incident was immortalized on video and the scene broadcast on social media. It shows a man on his back, suspended in the void about 10 meters above the ground. With his feet clinging to the electric pole, he multiplies the pelvic straightening by force of the abdominals.

The local press warned against any temptation to reproduce such “dangerous behavior”.

Tens of thousands of households affected

For safety reasons, the local electricity company had to cut the power and tens of thousands of homes suffered the consequences, said the People’s Daily.

The subject was widely discussed Tuesday on the social network Weibo – equivalent in China of Twitter where the American platform is banned – and totaled more than 1.7 million views.

“Without electricity, I was really in trouble […] and when I learned the reason for the cut I was both puzzled and amused “, commented a user.

“Power cuts can cost a lot of money and lead to a fatal accident”, reacted another, lambasting an act of bad taste.
