Alexander Suvorov, head of the Department of Molecular Microbiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine in St. Petersburg, Russia, is the one who came up with the idea to develop a COVID-19 vaccine based on dairy products.
The scientist, together with his team of researchers, developed prototypes of vaccines against meningitis, influenza and streptococcus. Why not make one for COVID-19 as well? So Professor Suvorov immediately began working with his colleagues and students at the Institute.
Fermented milk with bacteria containing coronavirus genes
“Are you telling me that this liquid is actually a vaccine against COVID?” A journalist asked.
“Yes, it is a vaccine against COVID,” the scientist replied proudly, adding, with the bottle in his hand: “It is simply milk fermented with bacteria that contain coronavirus genes!”
“Our initial idea was to use this genetic machinery of dairy bacteria as a platform or vector to introduce the gene for any type of pathogen, including the coronavirus gene, into the body,” said Alexandru Suvorov.
It took his team weeks to replicate the COVID-19 gene proteins they needed before introducing them into dairy bacteria.
“I did some models and syntheses, then I had the formula I needed,” he said.
Anti-COVID yogurt is given in one gulp
So, the result also appeared: an anti-COVID yogurt that is administered in a single sip and that looks promising, according to the results of preliminary tests performed on hundreds of animals, mainly guinea pigs.
The tests concluded that the mice developed antibodies not only in the blood, but also in the mucous tissues that cover the respiratory and digestive systems, exactly where the SARS-CoV-2 virus grows before attacking the rest of the human body.
This is a major advantage, says Professor Suvorov, because it produces immunity at the entry points of the infection, namely the nasal cavities and the throat and small intestine.
Not to mention, he says, that the response of the intestinal immune system is stronger than that of an intramuscular injection, writes dcmedical.ro.
