The United States is preparing its response to the poisoning and imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and is expected to coordinate sanctions with European allies in the coming weeks.
This was reported by Politico.
The publication notes that the administration of former US President Donald Trump has prepared sanctions for Navalny’s poisoning, but Biden’s team wants to form its own course.
A senior Biden administration official declined to comment on any specifics about the sanctions, but said: “We are considering available options.”
“Suffice it to say that we will not sit idly by in the face of these human rights violations,” the official added.
The new sanctions will be the first step by the new US administration in bringing Russia to justice for human rights abuses.
The day before, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that the European Union would impose sanctions on Russia within a week over Navalny’s arrest.
According to Reuters, the EU sanctions will cover the head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the FSVP Alexander Kalashnikov, the commander of the Rosguard Viktor Zolotov and Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov. They will be banned from entering the EU, and assets in EU banks will be frozen.
