Washington : The US authorities announced the arrest of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman’s wife, on Monday at Washington International Airport, on suspicion of belonging to a drug smuggling network.
Emma Coronel Aesboro, 31, who holds dual Mexican and American citizenship, is to appear before a federal judge on Tuesday. El Chapo, who co-founded the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel, was considered the most influential drug dealer in the world.
In July 2019, a Brooklyn federal court sentenced him to life in prison for smuggling at least 1,200 tons of cocaine into the United States within 25 years.
Since the sentencing, El Chapo has been transferred to a maximum protection prison in Colorado. Emma Coronel Isboro, a former beauty queen, is accused of being a member of a gang to smuggle drugs including cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamine to the United States.
According to the document detailing the prosecutions against her, she is also accused of participating in the complex operation that allowed her husband, who is 32 years her senior, to escape from a Mexican prison in July 2015 through a tunnel stretching half a kilometer.
Her lawyer, Geoffrey Lichtman, told AFP that Emma Coronel Esboro plans to plead her innocence.
The FBI is responsible for investigations related to Emma, who attended her husband’s trial almost entirely in 2019.
