“This term ‘third wave’ would not be accurate and correct to describe the current situation. Yes, the situation is improving, we are seeing some stabilization, but the third wave in society is associated with strict quarantine, high levels of infection, [lielu] death [skaitu], poor situation in hospitals. That term is probably incorrect, “Krepšta told reporters after a meeting of the president’s health care expert council.
It has already been reported that Statistics Lithuania warned on Monday that the third wave of the new coronavirus is likely to begin in the country.
“It looks like we have started the third wave of the pandemic. Lithuania’s trajectory in the space of two pandemic indicators returns to the old tracks, which we have already ridden in October,” the department said in a statement issued on Monday.
It states that the number of new infections registered in the country within one day is no longer decreasing and the proportion of positive tests is growing.
“This trend has been going on for a week now, but now there is no doubt about it,” the statisticians admitted.
Lithuanian Chief Epidemiologist Loreta Ašokliene, commenting on the warning issued by the Department of Statistics that the third wave may be starting, told reporters that it would be premature to talk about the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Lithuania, but there are some worrying signs.
The expert has explained the current situation with the increase in the mobility of the population, which has been observed throughout the last week since some relief was introduced in the quarantine regime. According to her, this could have been predicted, so the situation needs to be closely monitored this week, but it is clear that the time has not yet come for new relief.
As reported, quarantine was announced in Lithuania in early November, but since mid-December, movement between municipalities has been allowed only in cases of special need. At the beginning of February, the ski centers could be reopened, but from last week it was allowed to open non-food stores with a separate entrance from the outside, as well as hairdressing and beauty salons.
