Tonight, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed disappointment over the decision of the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on Russian officials responsible for the treatment of the closed oppositionist Alexei Navalny and his supporters.
“The decision adopted by the Foreign Affairs Council (EU) on February 22 under a fictitious pretext in order to prepare new illegal and unilateral sanctions against Russian citizens is disappointing,” the Russian diplomacy said in a statement.
EU foreign ministers decided today to impose new, targeted sanctions against Russian officials responsible for proceedings against Navalny.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said today that it was a unanimous decision by EU foreign ministers and that sanctions would be determined and would take effect within a week at the latest.
