Our frozen Iranian assets will be released after consulting with Washington

The South Korean Foreign Ministry announced today, Tuesday, that the frozen Iranian assets in South Korea will be released after consulting with Washington, after Iran said that an agreement had been reached with the Korean side on how to transfer and use the frozen funds.

The Iranian government website stated that an agreement was reached on Monday morning (Tehran time) during a meeting between the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Abdel Nasser Humti, and the Korean Ambassador to Iran, Ryu Jeong-hyun.

For his part, Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabiei said today, Tuesday, that one billion dollars of Iranian funds frozen in South Korea will be released.

Rabiei stressed that “Iran has reached understandings with South Korea and Japan, and that it is negotiating with Iraq and the Sultanate of Oman, to release the frozen Iranian funds” there.

An official from the Korean Foreign Ministry said earlier this month that Seoul and Washington are about to conclude discussions on the use of frozen funds to pay back United Nations dues to Iran, with Iran agreeing to the proposal.

In order to facilitate humanitarian trade with Iran, including medicines and medical equipment, South Korea is seeking to use a Swiss communication channel supported by the United States, which is the Swiss Agreement on Humanitarian Trade, whereby Iranian funds will be used to purchase the products of Swiss companies, according to what the Korean “Yonhap” agency reported.
