Population record on Gotland | SVT News

– This is good news. It is not enough to emphasize the value of a growing population on Gotland. Among other things, it gives us increased economic activity, the business community is stimulated and we get increased access to skilled labor, says Eva Nypelius (C), chairman of the regional board, in a press release from the region.

It has taken 75 years to reach the level, when in 1945 there were almost 60,000 people registered on the island. During the fifties, many young people chose to move from Gotland for work. Since then, the population has been stagnant for some periods, but in the last five years the curve has pointed upwards.

– That more people choose Gotland as their home is a good proof that we are an attractive place to live and work. Now we hope that more of all part-time residents also choose Gotland as their fixed point, says Peter Lindvall, regional director.

SVT Nyheter Öst has previously reported on the 60s and 70s who are responsible for moving to Gotland. We met Karin Bill, one of those who has recently moved to Gotland.
