The wife of the imprisoned Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has been arrested in the United States: She is said to have been instrumental in a conspiracy to smuggle international drugs.
The notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has been in custody since 2019 – now his wife could follow him: Emma Coronel Aispuro has been arrested in the USA on charges of international drug trafficking. The 31-year-old was at the airport in the US capital Washington arrested and is due to appear in court on Tuesday via video link, the US Department of Justice announced. Coronel has both Mexican and American citizenship.
Help to escape
Aispuro allegedly participated in a plot to smuggle cocaine, meth, heroin and marijuana into the United States. She is also accused of helping Guzmán’s spectacular escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. At the same time, she is said to have urged the Mexican government to improve the prison conditions for her husband. Guzmán is in a maximum security prison in the mountainous desert of the state of Colorado.
Life imprisonment for Guzmán
“El Chapo” was the leader of the powerful Sinaloa cartel in Mexico for 25 years. In 2017 he was extradited to the United States by the Mexican authorities. In July 2019, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for drug trafficking, money laundering and other offenses – his wife was then among the spectators in the courtroom. The two are said to have been together since at least 2007, they are parents of twin daughters.
