The online audio platform Spotify announced on Monday its launch in more than 80 new countries, including dozens of African countries, nearly doubling the number of markets covered. Among the most important in terms of population are Nigeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh, but also Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique.
In all these new countries of establishment, Spotify will offer the two formulas of its offer, one free, the other paid. The platform will make its entire musical catalog available and says it wants to collaborate with local players in order to expand its range of music from the market concerned.
Over a billion people
Recommendations submitted to subscribers will be tailored to each country, Spotify said in a statement. As for podcasts, the majority of new markets will have access to the entire Spotify catalog, which now has more than two million programs.
All of these new markets will give access to a population of more than one billion people and almost double the number of countries and territories of presence, which will exceed 170.
At the end of 2020, Spotify had 345 million active users, including 155 million paid, making it by far the leading online music platform in the world.
