One third of the population tested – in one week. Mass testing is Austria’s strategy to deal with a second wave of the spread of infection and to be able to open schools and workplaces.

In the mountainous, Central European country with nine million inhabitants, three million tests were performed last week alone. Half of these were performed on students, the schools opened earlier in February and to receive tuition, school children must be tested twice a week.
Hundreds of centers, pharmacies and companies also have test opportunities. To enter, for example, a nursing home, a ski resort or a hairdresser, paper with a negative test result that is less than 48 hours old is required.
– The only way to control the pandemic, says Katharina Reich, medical officer at the Ministry of Health about the strategy with available tests.
But there are countries that test to an even greater extent than Austria. Neighboring Slovenia, for example, has performed 49.2 tests on 1,000 people in the last seven-day period.
