Washington, USA (CNN) – The US Supreme Court paved the way for a New York attorney general to obtain tax returns for former President Donald Trump, who fought hard to protect his securities from plaintiffs.
The documents will be subject to jury confidentiality rules that restrict their public release. The ruling is a bitter loss for Trump, even if his tax records are protected from public disclosure, after he repeatedly argued that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s subpoena was “loose and in bad faith.”
And the Supreme Court ruling means that a grand jury investigation into alleged silent money payments and other cases will no longer be hampered by Trump’s efforts to keep documents secret. It is expected that the attorney general’s office will have access to the records within the next few days.
For his part, Donald Trump said in a statement that the Vance investigation “is the continuation of the greatest political pursuit in the history of our country.” He added, “The Supreme Court should not have allowed it, but they did.”
Trump continued by saying: “This is something that has never happened to a president before. Everything is inspired by Democrats in a completely democratic location, the city and state of New York, completely controlled and dominated by an enemy of me, Governor Andrew Cuomo.”
