Emma Coronel Esporo, wife of jailed Mexican drug lord El Chapo Guzman, has been arrested in the United States on suspicion of drug trafficking. The U.S. Department of Justice reported the information.
The Justice Department said in a statement that Emma Coronel, 31, was detained at Dulles International Airport outside Washington DC. He is accused of distributing cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana.
Guzman is currently serving a life sentence in New York for drug and money laundering. Guzman, 63, was the former head of the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico. According to officials, the group was the largest drug trafficker in the United States.
During Guzman’s trial in 2019, the thrilling story of his life came out. He started raping and killing former cartel members and rivals in cold blood from the age of 13.
Emma Coronel will appear in federal court in Washington DC on Tuesday via video conference, the Justice Department said.
In addition to drug trafficking charges, Emma Coronel is accused of helping her husband El Chapo Guzman escape from a Mexican prison in 2015.
Guzman escaped from Altiplano, Mexico’s highest security prison. His son bought a place next to the prison, and tunnel diggers confirmed Guzman’s actual location via a GPS watch stolen from the prison. Guzman escaped from prison through a tunnel on a specially made motorcycle.
According to court documents, Emma Coronel was involved in another escape plan before Guzman was extradited to the United States in 2016. However, no comment was received from the colonel regarding the allegation.
