Georgia’s former defense minister has become prime minister; police detain opposition leader / Day

Gahariya, who had spent two months as prime minister, resigned over an internal government dispute over an attempt to obtain a court ruling on the arrest of opposition leader Nick Melia.

Parliament on Monday elected a new cabinet with the ruling party The Georgian dream support despite a boycott by the opposition.

Georgian police on Tuesday detained Melia, the leader of the opposition United National Movement (ENM), and used tear gas and violent methods at the party’s office during the operation, exacerbating the political crisis that began last year with the disputed parliamentary elections.

Television footage showed Melia, the leader of the largest opposition party, being removed from the party’s headquarters.

Hundreds of police officers used tear gas against Melia’s supporters and leaders of all opposition parties who had set up camp at the party’s headquarters since Wednesday, according to the TV channel. Mtavari TV in the report.

Many opposition supporters have been detained.

“The scenes at the ENM headquarters are shocking this morning,” British Clerk Mark Clayton said on Twitter.

“Violence and chaos are the last thing Georgia needs right now. I urge all parties to exercise restraint now and in the coming days.”

Melia is accused of organizing mass violence during protests against the government in 2019. If convicted, the politician faces nine years in prison.

The protests in 2019 were triggered by a visit by a delegation of Russian parliamentarians, during which a representative of the Russian State Duma delegation took over the chairmanship of the meeting on religious and political issues in the plenary hall of the Georgian Parliament.

Melia has denied the allegations against him as politically motivated.

The authorities’ plan to detain Melia has exacerbated the political crisis in Georgia since the October parliamentary elections.

Opposition officials have declined their seats in parliament and called for new elections.

The United States and the European Union last week urged the Georgian government to resolve the crisis peacefully and to ensure that the justice system is free from political engagement.

Georgia’s opposition has boycotted parliament since the October parliamentary elections. The ruling party won The Georgian dream, but the opposition believes that there has been fraud in the election process.
