Being imprisoned somewhere against one’s will is a nightmare for many people. Such an experience was described by five sailors who were forced to live on an oil tanker for almost four years as “living hell”. It looks like they will finally be able to return home now

The nightmare of the sailors from the ship MT Iba started in 2017. Then, the owner of the ship for weighing 5,000 tons stopped paying his crew, as well as paying the fees for using the port where he normally parks. Due to legal regulations, the crew could not leave the ship, landed on the coast of the United Arab Emirates for the last time and have not touched the mainland since then.

The sailors managed to survive only thanks to the charity that brought them food and other basic products during this period. However, soon the crew could leave the ship forever, according to The Guardian. Recently, after literally a year, he reached the nearby mainland, where its members met with representatives of the company Alko Shipping, to which the ship previously belonged.

Its new owners, Shark Power Marina, have already paid the crew about 70% of the missing payments, which is about 165 thousand dollars (135 thousand euros). After that, the ship needs to be secured and the anchor, which was recently damaged, repaired. Returning to the families, five men could return in early March.

“The buyer of the ship promised to take us home,” said Nai Vin, a 53-year-old engineer from Myanmar. “My family is really happy.” Along with Nai Vin, there is another engineer on board, 52-year-old Riasat Ali from Pakistan. , and a trio from India, including the chef.

“If everything goes according to plan, in 15 days he will be at the airport in Dubai, from where he will fly home,” said Andy Boverman, regional director of the Seafarers’ Mission, which helps rescue seafarers. “When the crew first came ashore, they were relocated. “Unfortunately, they could not leave yet and they had to return to the ship,” he added.

In order for seafarers to be able to return home without difficulty, they must have proper documents. Therefore, the embassies of their home countries in the United Arab Emirates are also involved in their rescue, helping to process new passports for the five. They will also have to pass PCR tests for covid-19 before departure. In case one of them has a positive result, they will go to the obligatory quarantine and later fly home.
