The situation in North and South Korea has changed in a very strange way in recent decades, as the former, unified Korean state in the II. torn to its northern and southern parts after World War II. The reunion once desired did not take place, and the result was a completely different standard of living.
At the end of World War II, South Korea received significant U.S. assistance, which brought about a complete recovery of its economy and culture, and is now one of the fastest growing, most modern states in the world. In contrast, North Korea remained under the communist, military regime that still defines the daily lives of those who live there.
Huge differences between the two countries
Photographer Jacob Laukaitis went on a seven-day, strictly guided tour of North Korea and, unlike his colleague, took pictures only of the things the government allowed tourists visiting here. Shortly afterwards, he got the same life situations in South Korea, and a comparison of his photos shows the gap between the two neighboring countries.
“Why weren’t the people of the north allowed to contact freely and share their thoughts with me, while the people of the south could do anything they wanted? When I saw these differences first hand, my heart broke. Of course, these images are just a visitor’s point of view, the situation can be much more drastic than that. But overall, they reflect a real and wide gap between the two Koreas, the photographer said after returning home from his trip to Korea.
