In the last week, Portugal went down 21 positions in the list of countries and territories in the worst situation on the average of new daily cases of contagion by the new coronavirus per million inhabitants, rising to 41st, according to the ourworldindata website.
The daily average between February 15th and 21st was 164.89 new cases per million inhabitants, which means a 42% decrease in relation to the 284.99 record of the previous week and confirms the downward trend in Portugal.
The list is headed by the Czech Republic (869.10), Montenegro (699.20) and Estonia (560), excluding countries with less than one million inhabitants, while the average of the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) is stood at 192.11.
In the number of daily deaths per million inhabitants in the last week, Portugal fell from second to fourth place, with an average of 8.98, 45% less than in the previous week (16.29), and is behind Slovakia (16.22), Czech Republic (14.29) and Montenegro (13.65).
In relation to the total number of cases per million inhabitants (77,213), Portugal is the sixth in the list, not counting small countries or territories, behind Montenegro (114,630), Czech Republic (107,681), Slovenia (88,875), Israel (86,654) ) and the United States (84,996).
In the indicator of global deaths per million inhabitants, Portugal is the sixth, with 1,565, in a list headed by Belgium (1,889) and in which Slovenia (1,816), Czech Republic (1,794), United Kingdom (1,779) and Italy (1,583). The EU average stood at 1,188 on February 20.
Ourworldindata.org is the result of a collaboration between researchers from the University of Oxford, UK, with the non-profit organization Global Change Data Lab.
The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 2,466,453 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 111 million cases of infection, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
In Portugal, 16,023 people died from 798,074 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.
