At least 11 people were killed when two illegal armed groups clashed in southwestern Colombia over the weekend, Defense Minister Diego Molano said yesterday, offering a reward for any information about the violence, with a promise that security would be better.
The shooting occurred in rural areas near Tumak, a city on the Pacific coast, Reuters reported.
Oliver Sinistera fighters (a group of former Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces) clashed with the Los Contadores, a gang fighting for supremacy in the area, the minister added.
Among the dead were members of armed groups, but also civilians.
There are about 9,700 hectares of coca plant in the area around Tumak, which is enough to produce 75 tons of cocaine every year, and that is exactly the reason for the conflict between the two groups, Molano added.
A reward of $ 56,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrests of El Gringo and Maria 40, leaders of the warring parties.
