Coronel, 31, is facing one charge of conspiracy to smuggle cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana into the United States.
Gusmão, known as El Chapo or “The Short”, had led the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico’s infamous drug trafficking groups.
In July 2019, a U.S. court sentenced Gusman to life imprisonment, convicting him of a “long-term criminal measure” smuggling tens of thousands of kilograms of cocaine into the United States and conspiring to commit murder and money laundering.
Gusmans was arrested in Mexico in January 2016 and extradited to the United States a year later.
According to the US Department of Justice, his wife participated in the cartel and also supported Gusman’s two attempts to escape from prison in Mexico. The first of these escape attempts in 2015 was successful.
It was not previously known that the US authorities intended to detain Gusmann’s wife.
Coronel, a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico and the mother of Gusmann’s children, had come to court almost every day during Gusmanne’s trial in New York.
Coronel is expected to attend a federal district court hearing in Washington by videoconference on Tuesday.
