Drug magnate Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman on 22.2 was arrested at Dulles Airport in Washington DC, USA, with allegations of drug trafficking.
Emma Coronel, 31 years old, holds US and Mexican citizenship.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31 years old, used to be the beauty queen in an upcoming contest in Mexico. She holds two American and Mexican citizenship, and was arrested by the police on February 22, according to the Daily Mail.
Coronel will appear in court on February 23, accused of being involved in the US trafficking of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana.
Coronel was also accused of helping her husband, the infamous drug boss El Chapo, escape from prison in Mexico on July 11, 2015.
Mike Vigil, a former US anti-narcotics officer who operated underground in Mexico, said Coronel is considered a “drug princess”, has a deep involvement in the drug trade.
After El Chapo was arrested again in 2016, Coronel is said to have planned to help her husband escape a second time. But Mexican authorities escorted El Chapo to the US for trial in January 2017.
Coronel appeared in El Chapo trial in 2019.
“She is not directly involved in drug distribution or money laundering operations, but has a role in the line,” Vigil said. “The allegations are related to her actions in the past, not that she is acting on her own.”
Jeffrey Lichtman, the attorney for drug mogul El Chapo, told the Daily Mail he would also defend Coronel.
For Coronel, who was born in California, USA, drug trafficking is a common family affair.
Ines, Coronel’s father, used to be a member of the Sinaloa gang. Omar’s brother is also involved in drug trafficking.
The FBI used to collect evidence on the phone, showing that El Chapo discussed business with Ines in 2011.
“Erase everything,” Guzman reminded Coronel, after she took back her phone.
Both Ines and Omar were arrested in April 2013. Coronel married El Chapo in 2007 and has twin daughters on August 15, 2011.
Two daughters Emali and Maria Joaquina were born in California, USA. Birth certificate leave the father’s full name blank.
