Emma Coronel, 31, is accused of transporting cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana to the United States, the Department said.
Mr. Guzman was the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico’s most notorious drug trafficking groups, until he was extradited to the United States in 2017. In July 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison.
According to the Department of Justice, Mr Coronel was involved in the cartel and also possibly contributed to two conspiracies to help Mr Guzman escape from prison in Mexico. During the first such attempt in 2015, he managed to escape to freedom.
It was not previously known that the U.S. authorities intended to arrest the spouse of a former baron of drug smugglers.
After twinning with Ms Guzman, Ms Coronel, who holds both U.S. and Mexican citizenship, appeared in New York court almost daily, where her husband’s case was heard for three months.
At the time, it was already suspected that she had contributed to Mr Guzman’s activities and helped him escape from prison, but the authorities allowed her to attend the meetings freely.
“I can say that I have nothing to be ashamed of. I’m not perfect, but I consider myself a good person who never intentionally hurt anyone, “she said as the court came to an end.
Mr Coronel is due to stand before a federal court in Washington on Tuesday by videoconference.
