U.S. federal police arrested Emma Coronel Aispuro, the 31-year-old wife of imprisoned former Mexican drug cartel chief Sinaloa Joaquin El Chap Guzman, at Dulles Airport near Washington on Monday. She is accused of involvement in international drug trafficking.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, who has two U.S.-Mexican citizenships, was regularly present at the high-profile trial of the 63-year-old two years ago. Joaquinu El Chapu Guzmanu at federal court in Brooklyn, New York, where he was sentenced to life in prison and another 30 years in prison. El Chapo is serving his sentence in what is supposedly the most secure federal prison in ADX Florence in the state of Colorado, reports STA.
Following her arrest, the wife of the former head of the Sinaloa drug cartel has been jailed overnight on charges of involvement in the distribution of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines across the U.S. and will appear before a federal judge today. She is also accused of helping her husband escape from a Mexican prison through a long underground tunnel in July 2015, and is expected to be involved in preparations for a new escape the following year.

They want to convince the 31-year-old to cooperate with the American police
U.S. commentators believe the 31-year-old was arrested to persuade El Chapa to cooperate with U.S. police. The war on drugs is currently somewhat curtailed as U.S.-Mexico relations become strained following a complication over a former Mexican defense minister Salvador Cienfuegos. He was arrested by Americans in October for collaborating with murder cartels, prompting Mexico to officially protest.
The United States then abruptly dropped the indictment last November and returned Cienfuegos to Mexico, where they also immediately ended the investigation there. El Chapo and Emma Coronel Aispuro were married in 2007, when she was just 18, reports STA.
