A schoolboy in Dnipro disrupted a lesson in patriotic education due to the fact that the military who came to the school spoke Russian. This was reported by the portal “Strana.ua” on Monday, February 22.
It is noted that the officers came to agitate teenagers to continue their careers in the army. However, the conversation did not work, since one of the 11th grade students began to interrupt the military and demanded that they switch from the Russian language, in which the officers spoke with the students, to Ukrainian.
Later, the student’s parents complained about the servicemen to the military registration and enlistment office, but the authorities did not apply any penalties to their employees.
On February 21, the head coach of FC Lviv, Vitaliy Shumsky, said that in the match of the 15th round of the Ukrainian championship with Kolos he received a yellow card after a request to the referee to speak with him in Ukrainian.
From January 16 in Ukraine, employees of supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, sports clubs, hairdressers and other service establishments were obliged to serve visitors only in Ukrainian, since the requirement of the corresponding article of the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language” came into force.
In April 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the final reading the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language.” The document provided for the creation of a special “language commission” that will monitor compliance with the law. The same law proposed to introduce exams for officials, determining the level of knowledge of the Ukrainian language, and to fine for violation of the law.
