Civil disobedience

Despite this, three weeks after the February 1 putsch and the arrest of the former head of the civilian government Aung San Suu Kyi, the mobilization in favor of democracy is not weakening. In addition to daily protests, a campaign of civil disobedience disrupts the functioning of the state and the economy.

“The protesters are urging people, especially teenagers and exalted young people, to embark on the path of confrontation where they will perish,” authorities warned on Sunday evening in a statement read on the channel. public television MRTV.

EU sanctions against the junta

In Brussels, the EU decided on Monday to sanction the military responsible for the coup, announced the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.

“The EU foreign ministers have decided on targeted sanctions against the economic and financial interests of the military, because in this country they are entrepreneurs and hold parts of the economy,” he said.

“A political agreement has been found to sanction the military and technical work has been launched to finalize (the sanctions) and have them adopted,” a diplomatic source said.

Hundreds of thousands of people marched through the streets of Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, on Monday. The residents of Yangon have seen a strengthening of security arrangements, with the deployment of many police and army trucks while roadblocks have been erected near the embassy district.

Other large gatherings also took place in the capital Naypyidaw as well as in Mandalay, the second city of Burma, Myitkyina (north) and Dawei (south). Many markets and shops have remained closed in Rangoon and other cities, after calls for a general strike to amplify the movement of civil disobedience.

To the massive protests against their coup, the Burmese military responded by gradually deploying more security forces, which further resorted to rubber bullets, tear gas, water cannons and sometimes even gunfire. real.

New US sanctions against the Burmese military junta

The United States on Monday announced sanctions against two leaders of the Burmese military junta that overthrew the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi, promising to take further action if the military again uses force against protesters. “We will not hesitate to take further action against those who commit acts of violence and suppress the will of the people. We will not weaken in our support for the Burmese people ”, warned the head of American diplomacy Antony Blinken.
