The wife of imprisoned Mexican drug baron Joaquín Guzmán, known as El Chapo (the Spit), was arrested on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking. But not in Mexico, but in the United States, at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice
31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro is suspected of involvement in drug trafficking, involved in the distribution of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.
She is also suspected of helping her husband escape from Mexico’s most tightly guarded Altiplano prison in 2015. The Chubby was specifically motorized in a tunnel dug under the prison.
The drug baron’s wife is due to appear in a federal court in Washington on Tuesday by video call. It is not yet clear what the woman with Mexican-American dual citizenship was looking for at an international airport near Washington.
Guzman is serving his life sentence in the country’s most tightly guarded prison, near Florence, Colorado. He was convicted in July 2019 of drug trafficking, multiple kidnappings, torture and murder, the telegraph office writes.
El Chapo was the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico’s largest and most violent drug trafficking network for a long time, and although one of the most notorious criminals of all time, the American press said his country, primarily in its narrower patriarch, Sinaloa, was seen by many as Robin Hood. He was arrested in 2016 in Mexico – where he had previously escaped from prison twice – and soon extradited to the United States.
At one time, the drug trade went so well for him that it was even on the Forbes list of the richest in the world in 2009, ranking 701st with an estimated $ 1 billion in assets at the time.
