7 a.m. – Weekly figures RIVM: number of corona cases increased again

For the second week in a row, the weekly number of corona infections has increased. The increase is slightly stronger than last week. The exact number will follow on Tuesday in the weekly calculation of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

The amount of positive tests per week has been declining for nearly two months since the end of December. At the time, RIVM received 82,340 reports of positive tests in seven days. That fell well below 30,000 infections in February. Last week, the downward trend came to an end when the number of infections was higher than the week before for the first time in eight weeks.

More and more people are contracting the British variant of the virus, the RIVM reported. About two out of every three infections now diagnosed are the British mutation of the virus, the institute estimates. RIVM previously thought that this point had already been reached at the beginning of February. However, analysis of samples showed the rate at which the mutated version advanced to be somewhat slower.

6.55 am – Easing expected at press conference on corona

The cabinet is expected to come on Tuesday evening with cautious relaxation of some corona measures. For example, high school students can probably go back to school partly. Hairdressers may also be allowed to reopen and there will be more space for shopping. The cabinet is also looking at whether young people can exercise outside again, say insiders.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Corona Minister Hugo de Jonge will give a press conference on Tuesday evening. The cabinet will only take a final decision on Tuesday afternoon. On Monday evening, sources emphasize that nothing is certain.

It seems almost certain that the controversial curfew will remain. Only by keeping this measure would there be room to partially reopen schools, sources say. Although last week the judge ruled that the curfew law was invalid, there is now a new law. An appeal against the decision is still pending.

6.52 am – ‘Complot crazy’ is for sure: corona is the beginning of the end of time

Anyone who refuses to take the corona vaccine ultimately risks decapitation. That is one of the messages in a door-to-door Christian magazine. Cost: six tons.

The magazine ‘Eyeopener’ has been compiled by the traveling pastor Jaap Dieleman (66) from Zeewolde, a well-known speaker in evangelical and Pentecostal churches. According to him, the circulation is now five million copies. The first edition has already been distributed in the Northern Netherlands and since last weekend other provinces have also been turned. Dieleman says he has already spent 600,000 euros. “My wife said: where do you start. But I managed to collect the money effortlessly. ”

6.48 am – Many more complaints about parcel deliverers in 2020

The number of complaints about parcel deliverers has increased significantly in the past year. This is shown by research that the Consumers’ Association has conducted for the third year in a row. In the corona year 2020, significantly more online orders were placed, because the stores were closed due to the lockdowns.

The union received 13,000 complaints about the delivery. That is 4,000 more than a year earlier, an increase of 44 percent. Most complaints were about undelivered parcels (24 percent), followed by complaints about false ‘not at home notifications’ (21 percent).

Consumers complained most about PostNL (8833) and DHL (2876). The increase in the number of complaints about the smaller delivery services is striking. For example, 1339 complaints were received about DPD, an increase of 84 percent compared to 2019. There were also considerably more complaints about GLS (plus 80 percent) and UPS (plus 62 percent) than last year.

6.25 am – Number of corona cases in Germany lower again

In Germany, 3,883 new infections with the corona virus have been registered in the past 24 hours, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of the RIVM. The number of deaths from Covid-19 disease has increased by 415.

The number of infections is lower than on Monday, when it was 4369 new cases. 7676 infections were reported on Sunday and 9164 on Saturday.

In total, 2,394,811 Germans are now infected with the corona virus. There are also 68,318 deaths registered.

Germany is currently in a lockdown that will last until at least 7 March. The authorities also recently extended the entry ban from countries where there are many infections with corona mutations, such as the United Kingdom and South Africa.

8.30pm – Flags in US at half mast at half a million corona deaths

President Joe Biden has ordered the US flag to be hung at half mast on federal government buildings to mark the death of half a million people in the United States from the coronavirus. The flag will remain at half mast for five days in tribute to the victims, his spokesman said.

The University of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, which is closely monitoring statistics on the virus, reported around 10:40 p.m. that the mark of half a million corona deaths had been passed.

The US is by far the world leader in the number of deaths. This also applies to the number of infections, which now stands at more than 28 million. The mark of 400,000 American corona deaths was passed over a month ago and the threshold of 100,000 at the end of May. In all countries combined, nearly 2.5 million people have died from Covid-19.
