The Swedish prosecutor’s office has charged a 47-year-old citizen with espionage in favor of Russia. He collected and passed information to a Russian diplomat for a monetary reward, according to the Swedish Prosecutor’s Office.
“As a consultant, he previously received materials to provide information to a foreign country, in this case Russia,” said prosecutor Mats Lungqvist.
The spy was detained during one of the meetings with the Russian diplomat. Then the accused received from him 3.3 thousand dollars. The prosecutor stressed that the money received by the accused shows how much Russia appreciated the information received.
According to the supervisory agency, the Swede illegally transferred information from work computers to personal and then to USB-drives. He also photographed some footage from a desktop computer screen.
The prosecutor’s office believes that the actions of the accused could have endangered the security of the country.
At the same time, the SVT agency clarifies that the man had been passing information about the Volvo and Scania car companies to the Russians for several years. He was arrested in February 2019, but the charges were filed only two years later. The detainee faces 6 years in prison.
