Customs officers of the State Revenue Service (SRS) prevented smuggling of 730,200 cigarettes by controlling trucks and trains. The cigarettes were hidden in a car with food cargo, as well as in the constructions and chips of a train car, the portal “Delfi” was informed by the service.

On February 20 of this year, the officials of the Pāternieki customs control point, based on the results of the customs risk analysis, directed a truck for scanning.
According to the accompanying documents, it contained a load of pasta, instant noodles and a mixture for making potato porridge. The cargo was brought from Russia and was to be delivered to the consignee in the Kaliningrad region.
Examining the scanned images of the vehicle, the customs officials found that a large amount of smuggled cigarettes was hidden in the cargo between the packages of the declared goods. As a result of in-depth inspections, 499,800 “Premjer” cigarettes and 162,200 “NZ Gold” cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps were seized. The total amount of cigarettes detected in the consignment is 662,000 pieces of cigarettes or 33,100 packets.
On the same day, February 20, while analyzing scanned images of a freight train arriving from Belarus, Indra customs officers suspected a possible undeclared goods in a wagon carrying wood chips. The train was sent to Daugavpils freight station for control. After unloading the chips, 40,000 Premier cigarettes were discovered in the consignment.
On February 19, at Daugavpils goods station, during the control of a freight train, customs officials opened a concealed cigarette concealment created in the wagon structure. It contained 28,200 NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
The amount of unpaid taxes to the state on seized cigarettes is approximately 115 thousand euros.
Upon detecting the signs of a criminal offense during the customs control, the case materials were handed over to the SRS Tax and Customs Police Board for decision-making regarding the initiation of criminal proceedings.
