Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of the world’s former greatest drug baron, has been arrested in the United States and could be brought to justice today.

The wife of imprisoned Mexican drug baron Joaquín Guzmán, known as Köpcös, has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice has announced.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, is due to appear in federal court in Washington on Tuesday. Coronel was present at the trial of Guzman two years ago in New York. The Reuters news agency wrote: it is not possible to know what a woman with Mexican-American dual citizenship was looking for at an international airport near Washington.

Guzman is serving his life sentence in the country’s most tightly guarded prison, near Florence, Colorado. He was convicted in July 2019 of drug trafficking, multiple kidnappings, torture and murder.

El Chapo was the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico’s largest and most violent drug dealer network in a long time. He was arrested in 2016 in Mexico, where he had previously escaped from prison twice, and he was soon extradited to the United States.
