The wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, nicknamed El Chapo, was arrested in the US on drug dealing charges.
It was announced that Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, was detained at Dulles International Airport in Washington DC.
Aispuro is accused of planning cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana distribution.
His wife, Guzman, is serving a life sentence in New York.
The former leader of the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico is estimated to be the most drug smuggler into the United States.
Many shocking information emerged in the 2019 trial of Guzmán, from drug abuse and rape of 13-year-old girls to his cold blooded murder of former cartel members and rivals.
Aispuro is accused of drug trafficking as well as for helping his wife escape from Mexican prison in 2015.
Guzman’s sons bought a house near the prison in question, and a tunnel was dug into his cell, whose coordinates were precisely determined thanks to a GPS clock that was secretly delivered to their father and constantly shared his location.
According to documents in the US case file, Aispuro planned another escape before his wife was extradited to the US in 2017.
Aispuro or his lawyers did not make any statements regarding the charges.
Aispuro, who has twins from Guzman, is both a US and Mexican citizen.
After the trial of his wife, he said, “I love my husband not as the person they want to show, but as the person I know, love and marry.”
Born in a poor family in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, Guzman raised the organized crime gang to the level 701st in the Forbes 2009 World’s Richest List.
Guzman’s wealth at that time was estimated at $ 1 billion.
