United States authorities (US) arrested the wife of the Mexican drug lord, Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, who is now in detention. The arrests were made at Dulles International Airport, outside Washington, on Monday (22/2) local time.
As reported AFP, Tuesday (23/2/2021), Emma Coronel Aispuro (31) was arrested and charged with one charge of conspiring to trade cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana to be imported into the US.
Aispuro’s husband, Guzman, is known to be the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel – one of Mexico’s most famous drug trafficking syndicates.
According to US Department of Justice documents, Guzman managed an operation that delivered hundreds of tonnes of narcotics to US soil. He is also suspected of masterminding the murder of several people who got in his way or became his rivals.
Guzman was extradited to the US in 2017 for trial. Two years later, he was found guilty on drug-related charges and sentenced to life in prison by a US court.
His wife, according to the US Justice Department, was involved in cartel activity and is suspected of assisting in two plots of Guzman’s escape from a Mexican prison, including a successful escape attempt in 2015.
Aisouro, who has dual US-Mexican nationality, was present almost every day during her husband’s trial in New York. She was prohibited from communicating with Guzman for two years while her husband was detained in the US before his trial.
