Not only roads but also sidewalks had turned into snowdrifts, forcing pedestrians to look for alternative routes. In addition, state management does not have enough snow clearing techniques to promptly prevent chaos.
The Texas Department of Transportation has released a photo taken last week on the I-35 freeway near Austin. It captures three people walking along a highway while cars pass by them. State management urges residents not to walk on the highway and to minimize displacement in general, while utilities struggle to clear snow and take it off roads and sidewalks.
Unprecedented winter weather has overloaded the state’s power grid, forcing power companies to introduce power outages to ensure the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as hospitals and water treatment plants.
Last week, the air temperature in Texas dropped to -18 degrees Celsius.
Low temperatures have also caused water pipes to burst, despite attempts by some homeowners to insulate them from the cold with blankets.
Extreme weather lasted until the weekend, after which the daily air temperature reached +20 degrees again at the beginning of this week.
