NASA released a video of the Perseverance landing on the planet Mars on Monday, February 22. The images show the rover during its descent, a critical phase that the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in charge of the “Mars 2020” mission, described as “Seven minutes of terror”. This expression sums up all the difficulty of entering the Martian atmosphere, of the final descent and of landing on the arid soil of the planet. A mission accomplished Thursday, February 18 at 9:55 p.m. (Paris time).
The mission of the US space agency, launched on July 30, 2020, aims to find traces of ancient life on the Red Planet, by collecting for at least two years up to about thirty rock samples. The sealed tubes must then be brought back to Earth by a future mission, in the 2030s. The first samples should begin this summer. They will be dug in different environments, including the Jezero crater, where researchers believe there was a lake 3.5 billion years ago.
