Trump wanted to keep the numbers secret. But the Washington Supreme Court ruling gives a New York prosecutor access to financial records.
Trump had gone to the Supreme Court for the second time last year, while still in the White House, to avoid turning his tax records over to the courts. The prosecutor, Democrat Cyrus Vance, has been trying for several years to gain insight into Trump’s financial records and accounting records from his days as a real estate mogul. Vance investigates whether there was tax avoidance, insurance fraud and bills messing around.
In response to the decision, the ex-president lashed out at justice. The Supreme Court should never have allowed this prosecution’s inquiry to happen “ at random, ” but the judges allowed it, Trump complained in a statement. “I keep fighting, just like I have for the past five years.”
