In February 2019, President Donald Trump and the leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un met for the second time. The talks focused mainly on Pyongyang’s nuclear disarmament, but were cut short after North Korea called for the lifting of international sanctions. Donald Trump later stated that the two-day talks with Kim Jong Un were friendly, but at the same time the United States could not agree to North Korea’s demands.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump then agreed that they would continue “productive discussions” on disarming nuclear weapons and improving mutual relations, the Korean Central Press Agency reported. But the Hanoi Summit ended without the leaders’ agreement.
BBC on Donald Trump’s talks with Kim Jong Un
Two years after the peak, the backstage of these conversations was featured in the new BBC series “Trump Takes On The World” directed by Tim Stirzaker. The circumstances were to surprise “even the most experienced diplomats”.
Matthew Pottinger, one of Trump’s security advisers, said, “the president offered Kim to be transported home aboard Air Force One.”
The president was aware that Kim was traveling through China to Hanoi by train for several days, so he said, “I can take you home in two hours if you want.” Kim refused
Shortly after the Hanoi summit, joint military exercises between the US and South Korea were canceled. According to the BBC, the reason was prosaic: the planned exercises were to be unhappy with Kim Jong Un.
Out of nowhere Trump said, “I’ll cancel these wargames (as he called them). They’re not needed, they’re costly, and that will make you happy.” I could not believe it – Presidential adviser John Bolton commented in an interview with the BBC.
– Pompey [sekretarz stanu – red.], Kelly [szef personelu Białego Domu – red.] and I sat in a room with Trump, he didn’t consult us on that. It was just his own idea. An unforced error, a concession for which we got nothing in return, said Bolton.
