A UN convoy has been attacked in Congo-Kinshasa, and Italy’s ambassador to the country has been killed, writes the Italian newspaper La Stampa.

According to the newspaper, Italian authorities have confirmed that the ambassador died in connection with the attack together with a police officer.

The UN has also confirmed that a convoy that was part of the World Food Program, WFP, was attacked. According to the UN, in addition to the Italian ambassador and a police officer, it was also a driver who worked for WFP who died in the attack. Several others who were part of the convoy were injured in the attack.

At 14 o’clock, Swedish time, it is still unclear who is behind the attack or why it took place.

It was during the morning on Monday that the attack was carried out and according to La Stampa, it must have been part of an abduction attempt.

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio also spoke in a press release on Monday. He writes that the Italian state today mourns the two citizens that the country lost in the attack and that their family and friends are supported by Italy.
